Wee Waa is Australia's Cotton Capital and the place Daft Punk selected to launch it's album Random Access Memories in 2013, a dynamic rural community situated in the rich agricultural heartland of the Lower Namoi Valley in North West NSW.  The town of Wee Waa has a population of 2,100, (according to the Census 2006 1,689 and 2011 Census 2,433) and services a far greater rural community as well as the villages of Merah North, Spring Plains, Burren Junction, Pilliga and Gwabegar. The majority of this area is rich fertile country well suited to the agricultural pursuits that sustain the district and provide its people with a quality way of life.

Wee Waa is a mere 42 kilometres off the Newell Highway, west of Narrabri, and is a gateway to the far west centres of Walgett, Collarenebri, Lightning Ridge Opal Fields and beyond.

Wee Waa is serviced by: Countrylink Rail, interstate coaches, and daily air services offered through Narrabri.
The Wee Waa district has an average summer minimum temperature of 17° and a maximum of around 37°. Recorded average winter minimum and maximum temperatures are 3° and 17° respectively. The district can also expect a rainfall level of approximately 635 millimetres in one calendar year. It is 190 m above sea level.

The Aboriginal meaning of Wee Waa is "Fire for Roasting", and it was the first town on the Namoi River, having had its beginnings in 1837. The birthplace of Australia's modern cotton industry, in April the area transforms into snowy white profusion from horizon to horizon as the cotton harvest gets under way. The town has 2 motels, 4 schools, a preschool, ABC Learning Centre, 2 hotels and 2 Caravan Parks as well as fine eating-places, a swimming pool, picturesque 9-hole golf course, bowling club, tennis courts, a modern sporting complex, a hostel for the aged and a new medical centre.

About the Role

In your new role, you will support the summer and winter pulse agronomy research project within DPI Agriculture, Northern Cropping Systems branch. You will provide technical assistance to the Research and Development Agronomist in research operations and management as well as assisting with the day to day running of projects, including the supervision of Technical Assistants and casual staff.

SYDNEY STORY FACTORY VISITS WEE WAA TO CELEBRATE TEEN WRITING

In 2016 a team of storytellers from Sydney Story Factory visited Wee Waa to run creative writing workshops with students at Wee Waa High School. Now they’re back, to celebrate the launch of State of Mind, a book of stories, memoirs and poems written by over 100 young people from across New South Wales.

On Thursday 12 October Dr Cath Keenan, co-founder and 2016 Australian of the Year Local Hero, and Richard Short, Sydney Story Factory Storyteller-in-Chief, are at Coonamble High to present copies of the book that their students helped write.
