NEW CODE TO PROTECT INEXPERIENCED HORSE RIDERS

NEW CODE TO PROTECT INEXPERIENCED HORSE RIDERS

A new Code of Practice to help reduce horse-related injuries and fatalities among novice and beginner riders has been released in NSW. Of the 133 fatalities that occurred Australia-wide between 2000 and 2014, 18 per cent involved people under the age of 20. The Code will help prevent horse-related injuries and fatalities among beginner and inexperienced riders and aims to ensure that the temperament of the horse and the experience of the rider are adequately matched. The Code has been developed following extensive consultation with more than 100 responses to calls for comment from key industry groups and individuals. Numerous businesses across the state offer horse-related activities and this Code will provide them with the practical tools they need to ensure they are complying with their obligations and doing everything they can to prevent injuries and fatalities. The NSW Government is committed to improving safety for inexperienced and novice horse riders, such as those participating in pony clubs, at jackaroo and jillaroo schools and trail riding schools. The Code includes practical tools such as a checklist for riders and a checklist for horses, to evaluate the level and skill of the rider and also to help assess the suitability of the horse for the activity being undertaken. The Code will come into effect on 1 February 2017. The Code of Practice is available from www.safework.nsw.gov.au

A 'TAH ON THE RISE: Coonamble's Hanigan joins Super Rugby Club for 2016 season

Local Coonamble/Pilliga Ned Hannigan has been chosen in the 2016 squad

Local Coonamble/Piliga, Ned Hannigan has been chosen in the 2016 squad to represent the Waratahs this season.

Last year he played in the under 20's side and toured OS with them. After watching many games with him in it at St Josephs College, Hunters Hill it's nice to see the hard work pay off.

A great career for an outstanding sportsman.

Congratulations Ned.

From the Daily Liberal

NED Hanigan is a star on the rise.

The Coonamble boy earned Australian Schoolboys selection in 2013, and last year represented Australia at the World Rugby 20s Championships in Italy, where he was named Australia's MVP.

Now his career has soared to new heights, with Hanigan elevated into the core training squad for the NSW Waratahs just before Christmas.

"I think it was a bit surreal," he said.

"Daryl (Gibson, Waratahs head coach) called me into his office and said 'you've been training well and we want to pull you on full-time'.

Two weeks ago he won his first Singapore major, the $150,000 Group 3 El Dorado Classic (2200m) riding stayer Sebrose.

Abbey legend to be honoured at Campdraft Carnival

Abbey legend to be honoured at Campdraft Carnival

Legendary stockhorse stallion, Abbey, and the two horsemen who forged his success will be honoured at a campdraft carnival at Narrabri Showgrounds this weeken (September 4, 5 and 6).

The ‘Abbey Dynasty Campdraft Carnival’ will be open only to descendants of the great sire and offer more than $20,000 in cash and prizes.

The event is one of the first of its kind and has received in excess of $23,000 in cash sponsorship.

All proceeds raised this weekend will be donated to pancreatic cancer and dementia research.

The carnival follows the recent death of Theo Hill, who stood Abbey on the historic Comara Station near Kempsey. Friends and associates of Mr Hill got together after his passing and decided to have a public tribute honouring his immense contribution to the stockhorse world.

Under Mr Hill’s management, Abbey sired a string of campdraft, showjumping and polocrosse champions that pushed the Australian Stock Horse Society stud book to an unbeaten 60,000 descendants.

Boars lose battle but not the war

Boars lose battle but not the war

Narrabri secure back-to-back minor premierships despite dropping first game of season.

The Narrabri Blue Boars perfect run this season may have been cut short in the very last regular Central North fixture on the weekend, however it sets up an enthralling couple of weeks of rugby as finals time begins to heat up.

Whilst Moree Bulls came away victorious on Dangar Park last Saturday, it wasn’t enough to stop the home side from securing another minor premiership and another major semi-final at home, courtesy of picking up two crucial bonus points during the game.

That was down to the Boars second-half comeback, which saw them finish with four tries and keep the game to within a seven-point contest.

Namoi comes out on top in a seven-goal thriller

Namoi comes out on top in a seven-goal thriller

Namoi United was celebrating for more than just one reason on Saturday.

The side not only came away with their second victory of the year against Moree FC but also, more importantly, climbed over Moree and out of last position on the Northern Inland Premier League (NIPL) Southern Conference ladder.

The visiting Moree men made Namoi work hard for the crucial three points, pushing the side right to the end in a 4-3 finish in favour of the Namoi Carps.

The weekend’s win has Carps looking likely to have pulled off another great escape and avoid the wooden-spoon for a second year running, with just two games left of the season.

Narrabri Boxing: Let’s get ready to rumble

Dreams will be made and careers could be put to bed.

Dreams will be made and careers could be put to bed.

That is how serious this weekend’s fight night at the Crossing Theatre is being taken by the pro boxers featuring on the event card.

Two World Boxing Association (WBA) title belts are up for grabs on the Saturday night.

Olympic boxer turned-professional gloveman, Cameron Hammond, is putting his WBA Oceania welterweight title on the line.

The 25-year-old, who is born and bred in Moree, will go toe-to-toe with Sydney’s Sedat Tasci.

Hammond is undefeated in 12

professional fights but will probably face his biggest challenge yet when he enters the Narrabri ring as the main event on Saturday evening.
