'Myley's law': parents of six-year-old quad bike victim want change

'Myley's law': parents of six-year-old quad bike victim want change

Sydney Morning Herald

Josh Maxwell wants it to be known as "Myley's law": a series of coronial recommendations that, if implemented, could prevent tragedies similar to the one which took the life of his six-year-old daughter.

Myley Maxwell was one of two young passengers on a quad bike being driven by a 13-year-old girl on a property near Narrabri, in the state's west, when it collided with a tree.

She succumbed to head injuries soon after.

"It’s something that we, the family have got to deal with for the rest of our lives. But if we can make change to prevent other children being put in this position, we’ve done our job as parents," Mr Maxwell said outside the NSW Coroner's Court in Lidcombe on Thursday morning.

The grieving North West NSW father's comments came after Deputy State Coroner Elizabeth Ryan handed down her findings following in inquest into Myley's death, among them that adults face criminal prosecution for allowing children under 16 to ride adult-sized quad bikes.

She also recommended the NSW Attorney-General consider introducing legislation making it an offence for adults to allow children to ride any quad bike without a helmet, and legislation making it easier for police to be able to enter properties where they suspected an offence had occurred.

GRDC Dealing with the Dry Info Session Wednesday 24 July at Rowena

Firsthand experience of drought and an understanding of the toll it can take on farming businesses, bank
balances and emotional well-being was the catalyst for a series of Dealing with the Dry: Farm management
options during and after drought forums being run across northern New South Wales next month.
Initiated by Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Grower Relations Manager Susan
McDonnell, the forums aim to deliver practical advice ranging from how to talk about debt with your bank
manager, to accessing government services and identifying and supporting mental health issues.
A grain grower herself, Mrs McDonnell said the GRDC Dealing with the Dry forums would be run in small
communities across NSW and were focused on delivering genuinely helpful information directly to those in
need.
“Unfortunately, like many people involved in rural industries, I know only too well the impact of drought. It can
be extremely demoralising and leave you wondering how you will get through both from a financial and
psychological perspective,” she said.

Gloucester's Lyn Stewart to launch her self-published book at Gloucester Bookshop

From the Gloucester Advocate story by Anne Keen

Gloucester's Lyn Stewart had a niggling interest in researching her family history.

Like many Australians, her family tree has a range of convicted criminals, which was partly what first piqued her interest. But it was chasing down that tale of her great great grandmother, Margaret Murphy which inspired her to write a book.

She started researching her relative by first acquiring Margaret's death certificate as it provided details of her date of death, the date and location of her birth, and the names of her parents.

Cotton powerhouse in the Namoi Valley now in play to go to Auction 25 July

A recent 'sea change' decision by Andrew and his wife Kim Revell to join the macadamia industry on the Far North Coast has put into play one of the Namoi Valley's top-performing cotton farms.

Wire Lagoon, a highly-developed irrigation farm of 738 hectares (1824ac), has been held by the Revell family for 16 years.

On July 25, it will go to auction in Narrabri with Landmark Harcourts.

Andrew and Kim Revell originally bought their Alstonville macadamia farm as a diversification move, but they became so attracted to the area that they now plan to up stumps and relocate.

It wasn't an easy decision, as the Revell family has been part of the Wee Waa farming scene since 1970.

It was at that time they moved to the Namoi Valley from Kununurra in Western Australia.

Andrew's parents, David and Helen, originally orchardists at Box Hill (Victoria), had been among the first wave of farmers selected to take up irrigation blocks in 1962 on the Ord River Scheme.

After seven pioneering years on the Ord, they were drawn to the new cotton growing area then opening up at Wee Waa, where they started sharefarming.
