Wee Waa model taking on international modelling competition

Wee Waa model taking on international modelling competition

A Wee Waa local will soon get a glimpse of the big city lights of Melbourne for an international modelling contest.

Toby Knight, 22, will be up against six other representatives from NSW in the national final event for Top Model Worldwide in February 2020. The winner of this heat will travel to London for the international competition.

Toby was first scouted via his Instagram page by a representative from Cosmopolitan magazine, who offered him the chance to compete in Top Model Australia.

"I was like, 'No worries, I'll give it a red hot crack'. I went to the [state] competition and had a bit of training ... and luckily enough I was picked up pretty quickly," Toby said.

It wasn't an easy ride to the top, though. After competing in the NSW finals and making the top 10, Toby wasn't chosen for the top four to travel to Melbourne. But, a stroke of luck meant he was offered a wildcard entry and the top four became a top six, with Toby included.

"It was a proper golden buzzer moment for me to make top 10. I didn't expect that ... at all," he said.

"This is something I would really like to do full time, but I never thought I would be capable of doing it. This opportunity has shown me I can probably bloody do this."

At the national final in February, Toby will complete another runway presentation to show his confidence and ability to pull off different looks. He will also have an interview with the judges.

From here, Toby said if he was to win it would be "unbelievable", and that Miranda Kerr should look out for "the next big thing" coming from a regional town.

DRESS DETECTIVE Miss Fisher’s Wardrobe - Kate Strasdin

Monday 13 July, 2020

The phenomenal success of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries has a great deal to do with the aesthetic of the TV show – 1920s Melbourne and a glamourous protagonist! This lecture looks at the dress in the 1920s, the designers who were influencing the style and the developments that were changing the way people thought about clothes. It is also a look behind the scenes, creating Phryne Fisher’s world and the flapper style so synonymous with the decade. It was a period that began to embrace sportswear, leisurewear, shortened hems as well as outrageous parties. It also looks at menswear of the period and the changes that were beginning to take place within the masculine wardrobe.

PACKING UP THE NATION - Caroline Shenton

Monday 17 August, 2020

This is the gripping and sometimes hilarious story of how a band of heroic curators and eccentric custodians saved Britain’s national heritage during their Darkest Hour. As Hitler’s forces gathered on the other side of the Channel to threaten the UK, men and women from London’s national museums, galleries and archives forged extraordinary plans to evacuate their collections to safety. Utilising country houses from Buckinghamshire to Cumbria, tube tunnels, Welsh mines and Wiltshire quarries, a team of unlikely heroes packed up their greatest treasures in a race against time. It was the sweltering summer of 1939.

THE AMADEUS MYTH Mozart (1756-91) - Sandy Burnett

Monday 14 September

Classical music reached a peak of perfection in Vienna during the last three decades of the Eighteenth Century, an era in which every aristocratic household worth its salt had a Kapelle or band of musicians to keep every-one entertained. In particular, the refined musical discourse of the string quartet was held to be the highest form of musical art; the elegant interplay of its various string instruments likened by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to “four intelligent people conversing”. In this talk, Sandy examines the perfect storm of circumstances that made this extraordinary era possible. He looks at selected excerpts of Classical elegance at its finest, and considers the remarkable figure of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a musician rightly prized – and mythologised – as one of the greatest ever known.

Killarney Bike Classic

27th September 2020

The Killarney Bike Classic started six years ago to raise funds for our local cancer groups and also as a way to remember a local farmer and grazier, Mark Lampe who rode from Killarney Gap to Sawn Rocks with a group of friends for an Easter get together with their families. Less than three months later, Mark lost his short battle with cancer. Mark grew up in Narrabri and loved the district. He would be so proud of the effort and support from so many people that will help make other families lives a little bit easier when they have to face the battle with cancer.

REPIN & THE WANDERERS - Kathy McLauchlan

Monday 19 October, 2020

At the start of the 19th century, Russia was still a newcomer to Europe's art scene. This lecture talks about the rise of a group of young painters known as the Wanderers who, from the 1860s onwards, forged a new and independent route for modern art. Their leading figure, Ilya Repin, evoked the realities of life through his paintings of people and landscapes. His major works would provoke admiration and controversy, establishing him as the most significant Russian painter of his time.

Comedians Mandy Nolan and Ellen Briggs are returning to the region for three free comedy shows in Wee Waa, Yetman & Bendemeer

from June 24-26. These are hosted by HealthWISE thanks to a grant from HNE

Irreverent pair Mandy Noland and Ellen Briggs are returning to the North West to give Wee Waa, Yetman and Bendemeer locals a taste of their down-to-earth comedy.
With seven children between them, the duo are not afraid to explore the ups and downs of domestic life, and have a collection of anecdotes about incidents labelled as ‘failures to parent’.
“We're 40 something mothers of teenagers, we're wives, and ex wives!” Mandy said.
“Ellen can wrangle a snake and operate a ride on mower in the afternoon, and by evening she dons heels and a frock and then she's the MC of a charity ball.”
Nothing is off the table in their act – from the beauty industry to menopause, weird TV shows, big undies, and the all-important issue of whose turn it is to unpack the dishwasher.
As ‘small town showgirls’, the pair have endless fun delivering their rapid fire routines on stage, and have a special connection to country audiences.
Hosted by HealthWISE thanks to a Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network (HNECC PHN) Empowering Our Communities grant, the duo will perform free shows in Wee Waa on June 24, Yetman on June 25 and Bendemeer on June 26.
