‘Exceptional’ sorghum harvest wraps up on Downs

‘Exceptional’ sorghum harvest wraps up on Downs

STRONG yields and minimal harvest disruptions have capped off a successful sorghum season on the Darling Downs.

An estimated 80 percent of the crop has been harvested across the Darling Downs and south to Goondiwindi, with only small volumes of later-planted sorghum remaining.

Harvest has wrapped up in northern New South Wales, where strong sorghum yields in pockets have helped offset a smaller planted area, while desiccation is under way on the Liverpool Plains.

Why a Solar Battery in Canberra Makes Sense for Energy Independence and Savings

Why a Solar Battery in Canberra Makes Sense for Energy Independence and Savings

Take control of your energy with a smart solar battery solution designed for Canberra living.

As Canberra continues to embrace solar power at a record pace, more households and businesses are looking beyond panels and exploring energy storage options. One of the most significant advancements in renewable energy adoption is the rise of solar battery systems—an innovation that allows you to store excess solar power for use after sunset or during grid outages.

For residents of the ACT, where progressive energy policies and solar rebates are in play, installing a solar battery in Canberra has become a smart long-term move. Whether you're aiming to reduce power bills, boost your self-sufficiency, or simply prepare for the future, battery storage offers a reliable, scalable solution.

Here’s everything you need to know about choosing, installing, and benefiting from a solar battery system in the Canberra region.

What Is a Solar Battery System?

A solar battery system stores the excess electricity generated by your solar panels during the day so it can be used when solar output drops—usually in the evening or early morning. Instead of feeding unused solar energy back into the grid for minimal return, you're able to store it and power your own home or business more effectively.

When paired with a high-quality inverter and efficient panels, batteries can help you:

  • Maximise your solar usage

  • Reduce reliance on the electricity grid

  • Protect your home during blackouts

  • Lower overall electricity costs

  • Move closer to a zero-emission lifestyle

With Canberra’s frequent sunny days and ongoing push for renewable energy, solar battery systems are becoming increasingly common in both new builds and retrofitted homes.

Why Invest in a Solar Battery in Canberra?

The ACT Government has long championed renewable energy, offering incentives, feed-in tariffs, and programs that encourage adoption. But even with those supports, one issue remains: solar panels only produce energy when the sun is shining.

Battery storage bridges that gap.

Here’s why battery storage makes particular sense for Canberra residents:

1. High Solar Adoption Rates
Canberra has one of the highest rates of rooftop solar installation per capita in Australia. A solar battery ensures you don’t waste the excess energy your panels produce during the day.

2. Energy Resilience
With increasingly unpredictable weather and grid outages becoming more common, battery storage gives you a dependable backup power source—especially important for families with medical equipment or home offices.

3. Time-of-Use Tariffs
Electricity is often more expensive during peak times in the evening. By drawing stored power from your battery, you avoid paying those higher rates.

4. Government Support
The ACT Government previously offered the Next Gen Energy Storage Program, and while rebates have evolved, the territory remains one of the most supportive in Australia when it comes to battery installation and energy efficiency.

If you're looking for examples of how sustainable energy practices are transforming Canberra communities, this Namoinews.com.au piece on green energy in the ACT offers insight into recent regional trends.

How Solar Batteries Work in Practice

When your rooftop solar panels generate electricity, that energy is used to power your home. Any surplus electricity is either:

  • Sent back into the grid (at a feed-in rate), or

  • Stored in your battery for later use

With a battery installed, your energy hierarchy changes. You draw power in this order:

  1. Solar generation (real-time)

  2. Stored battery power

  3. Grid power (only if needed)

This setup significantly reduces grid reliance and allows households to control when and how they use energy.

Modern systems also include smart energy management tools, enabling you to monitor usage, track savings, and adjust loads via mobile apps.

What Types of Batteries Are Available?

There are two main types of batteries used in residential solar systems:

1. Lithium-Ion Batteries
These are the most common and offer high efficiency, long life spans, and compact design. They’re ideal for homes and small businesses. Brands like Tesla, Sonnen, and LG Energy Solution lead the market.

2. Lead-Acid Batteries
These are typically used in off-grid setups. While more affordable upfront, they are bulkier and have shorter lifespans compared to lithium options.

Capacity typically ranges from 5kWh to 15kWh, with the average Canberra home using 15–25kWh daily. Your installer will help determine the right capacity based on your current solar setup, usage patterns, and goals.

For a breakdown of how to size your battery system effectively, check out this Namoinews.com.au guide on solar power planning.

What About Costs?

Prices for solar batteries in Canberra vary based on size, brand, and system complexity. On average:

  • Small systems (5kWh): $5,000–$7,500

  • Mid-range systems (10kWh): $9,000–$12,000

  • Premium systems (13kWh+): $13,000–$16,000+

While that might seem steep, the long-term financial benefits can outweigh the initial investment—especially if your current solar setup is generating more power than you’re using during the day.

And with rising electricity prices and growing interest in sustainability, homes with solar batteries may also see increased resale value.
